Back cover of the Blue box

These seem to be the cheapest outfits just because they came in flat cardstock (blister paks) under plastic bubbles. When did they come out? Were they really the most discount of outfits? Some iconic outfits from the TV shows are included, like Laverne, Cleopatra and Good Earth, outfits that are either iconic or have gone on to sell for $$$ at auctions.

The Blue box dresses originally sold for $2.98 according to Sandra Bryan in Cher Doll & Her Celebrity Friends, confirming they were the cheapest. She also says there were 13 total (8 shown in the fold-out brochure and 5 more found in the 1977 Mego catalog.

My research turned up this list of 9 outfits:

  1. Good Earth: a black and white dress with matching hat from Cher. According to Bryan, this also had a green variation.
  2. Chocolate Mocca/Mint Julep: Chocolate Mocca  was the official brochure title but the version sold was a mint green pantsuit with a matching net shawl. According to Bryan there may also have been a pink version in the 1977 Sears catalog.
  3. Hoedown: white farmer’s overalls with blue suspenders and flares
  4. Jumperoo: green PJs with a long rainbow scarf
  5. Laverne:  from The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour
  6. Grasshopper: a dark green gown with a ruffle down the front
  7. Strawberry: a pink pantsuit with leg flares
  8. Cleopatra: a baby blue dress – from Cher (it was a white on the show)
  9. Means Business: a blue office blouse and skirt with knee-high boots

There were 4 missing outfits in my research, which according to Bryan’s book are:

  1. Blue Streak: a white glitter dress with a royal blue diagonal panel
  2. Purple Passion: an orange knit top and pink and purple flowered flared pants. Bryan’s book appropriately has this outfit assigned to Rosa status from the Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour skit Sonny’s Pizzeria. (pictured in the ad above)
  3. A yellow gown with a dramatic black starburst down the front (pictured in the ad above)
  4. Quick Silver: and off-the-shoulder white gown with puffy sleeves (pictured in the ad above and the Bryan book has an example)
