Cher never liked her crooked teeth and she really didn’t like her nose and teeth as seen on the big movie screen. So she had them both fixed in the mid-1980s somewhere between the movies Silkwood and The Witches of Eastwick. The hardcore fans loved those old teeth and the way they shaped her mouth. Cher looked a bit more generic after the changes, but she was probably okay with that.

The 1960s

From 16 Magazine:

Dear Cher, I have trouble with my hair, my face, and—worse—I have buck teeth. Please don’t laugh. I really want to know what to do. I am 11 years old. Carol, Atwater, Col.

Dear Carol, you must never think for one minute that I would laugh at you or anyone with a problem. I was young once, too, and I know how very serious all these problems are. I only hope that I can help you and any other 16-ers who write to me in some small way. I think it would serve you well to order 16’s Beauty and Popularity Book, as you did not spell out your problems in any detail and the Beauty Book covers all problems, from shyness to skin and hair care. Buck teeth can only be treated by a dentist (who will probably send you to a good orthodontist). I advise you to get your parents to take you to the dentist at once, as you are still young enough to get the braces that will cure your buck teeth problem forever.

Dear Cher, …Also, how can I whiten my teeth? Desperate, Thornton, Col.

Dear Desperate, …To whiten your teeth, brush them gently with common household baking soda once a week. Brush downwards only. Since most of us are born with our teeth a permanent color, it is hard to whiten teeth that are naturally sort of yellowish, but you can try. Best of luck.

The 1970s

At her most glamourous, Cher had those crooked teeth. It was great! Like Cher says herself, “just beautiful is boring.”

The 1980s

There was Cher’s mouth and teeth before the braces and after after the braces.

The old teeth and the old mouth-shape around the time of Silkwood:

Cher with teeth-fixing in progress:

The first time I saw Cher’s new mouth was in the theater while watching the movie The Witches of Eastwick. I had cognitive dissonance watching that first outdoor lunch scene where Alexandra Medford meets Daryl Van Horne and then later in the bedroom scene where Cher tells Jack Nicholson he doesn’t have much going for him.

Tips fromForever Fit (1991)

Robert Haas says your mouth is a jungle, that there are 300 species and billions of life forms that live in your mouth. This causes bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease.

Brush two times a day with fluoride and a mechanical toothbrush. Floss once a day and consider an irrigation device. Get regular checkups.

Plaque is not actually food residue; it’s bacteria from your own cells.

Haas recommends the ingredient sanguinaria, found at the time in Viadent. Other recommended brands are Interplack, Water-pik and Listerine.
